Seventeen-year-old Evan Hansen has felt invisible his entire life. Triad Ballet’s Don Quixote Is This Week — and There’s More Than a Ballet Here

Don Quixote tilts at windmills. Triad International Ballet brings them to life.

The company opens at the Carolina Theatre this Wednesday and Thursday, May 6 and 7, with what is genuinely one of ballet’s most joyful productions. Petipa’s choreography, Minkus’s exuberant score, and a story that holds both the dreamer and the pragmatist inside it — the knight who sees giants where there are windmills, and the squire who sees windmills and follows anyway. It’s funny, it’s gorgeous, and it moves quickly – straight to your heart!

Their resources page for the performance is one of those quietly generous things a company builds for the community and doesn’t make a fuss about. It runs from a Library of Congress deep-dive on Cervantes as the inventor of modern fiction, through the full Minkus score (timestamped, every movement), into the real engineering history of wind turbines, the tangled roots of flamenco, and the 15th-century Spanish guitar. It trusts you to be curious.

Often referred to as ballet’s most beloved romantic comedy, Don Quixote, based on Miguel de Cervantes’ definitive novel, is a heart-warming story of one man’s quest for love. Its namesake character is an older gentleman, a lover of books and of love itself, who becomes so captivated by stories of knights and their gallantry that he dreams up his own adventure. When he wakes, he and his faithful squire, Sancho Panzo, set out on a quest to save Dulcinea, the woman of Don Quixote’s dreams. Synopsis

Prince Tamino gets saved from a serpent, handed a magic flute, and shown a portrait of a beautiful girl — and just like that, he’s on a quest. His reluctant sidekick: Papageno, a bumbling birdcatcher with magic bells and extremely low ambitions (he just wants a girlfriend).

The mission: rescue Pamina from the villainous Sarastro. Twist: Sarastro isn’t the villain. The girl’s own mother — the Queen of the Night — is. She’s been lying about everything, and she’d like her daughter to commit murder, thanks.

While Tamino navigates mysterious temples and tests of silence and courage, Papageno mostly eats, talks when he shouldn’t, and nearly hangs himself over a girl. Magic bells fix that.

Tamino and Pamina face fire and water together, protected by the flute. The Queen attacks. The Queen loses. Love wins, wisdom prevails, and Papageno finally gets his Papagena.

Once Upon a One More Time is a Broadway musical that reimagines classic fairy tales with a feminist twist, featuring the music of Britney Spears. The story follows fairy-tale princesses who question their conventional “happily ever after” when a rogue fairy godmother introduces them to Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique.
